The front page of this site is, somewhat ironically, a relic of a bygone era in web design. The logo beckons you into the “atomic age”; which was exactly the thinking behind a large proportion of sites from the Internet’s infancy, a time when everything was futuristic and space age, and everywhere made use of the space age metaphor.

Unfortunately there are a lot of reasons why this wasn’t true. In the fifties we were promised hover cars but ended up with the petrol crisis; in the nineties the Internet was promised as new, fresh and instant, yet what we in reality saw looked decidedly amateurish in comparison with magazine print, and was far from instant.

That is entirely the case with 1atom12. The logo is thoroughly uninspiring, and the page itself takes far too long to load. Since all the content on the front page (and there is a massive amount) is contained in a table, you don’t see any of it until it has all downloaded, it seems as though you are waiting for nothing, and I’m sure many will be inclined to reach for the “Stop”.

Though the content does go some way to making up for such lacklustre design and style, the navigation is based too much on guesswork so finding off-blog material will prove tiresome.

This site does border on the “Adult” from times, with a cam view showing semi-exposed breasts, but there isn’t enough to warrant such a label.

Whether or not there is enough on the site to warrant a visit is dependent on taste and patience.1atom12

Holy smokes, Batman.

Tucked far away in an innocuous corner of cyberspace, on Blogspot to be precise, home to so many dull blogs, lies a gem. It’s name is “The Super Highway That Is My Life.”

OK, so the design is low-key and fairly uninspiring, it’s not dripping with great links, but – aah! – the writing is pure quality.

It’s got it all. Passionate, intelligent, articulate and heartfelt, I just wanted to read and read and read… and couldn’t help but empathise with everything he said.

Go. There. Now. Nuff said. The Super Highway That Is My Life

This site’s okay. Simple layout — just a few words about the author, Joey, some links to other weblogs he likes and a comment form for readers to fill out. The site’s pretty straight forward. I think he’s in the process of adding more things to his site since most of his posts were focused on trying to figure out his site’s design. Some posts have some interesting links though like the one about the McDonald’s burger which contained something that’s not part of the meal. But I think over time and in the next month or so his site will definitely be one that has some cool stuff to read.Tashrin

I liked the layout when the site came up. It has this gold-brownish look to it and the picture at the top of the site is a picture deserted road and a yield sign with a camel on it.

Meredith’s post are okay. The kept me interested for the most part, but nothing to really rave about. She basically talks about your everyday stuff, like going to the grocery store and spending way too much for food, or previous trip she’s taken somewhere, music and other things.

One thing I liked was she has a “Friday Five” where on Fridays she’ll posts 5 questions, or more from one of those email type surveys you’d get that asks you to answer some questions such as, “What’s your favorite tv show” or, “If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be?” It gives you a little more sight about who she is.

I was a bit bummed out about some of the links around her site. Her link that talks about her site and possible more information about who the author is didn’t work. But one thing that was cute was “Mer’s Mirror” which displays a different picture every time you come to her site. There are also links to TV show’s she’s watching, upcoming concerts, current tunes she’s grooving to and of course other blogs.

Overall, this is an okay site.that crazy Casbah jive

This website is like a messy collision between Victor Meldrew, the guy from As Good As It Gets and a weblog. And, like all the best accidents, you just can’t tear your eyes away.

Why People Suck isn’t, as I anticipated, another average blog with a name chosen to try and make it sound edgy. In fact, it’s a collection of “misanthropic” rants on why people – and things – suck.

In it’s short 5 day history, Rivka has already penned vitriolic entries on people with cellphones in cinemas, “pro-lifers” issuing death threats, Network Solutions and a savage epic on her noisy neighbours.

The design is competent, with the evil face and red and black colour scheme. However, it does commit the sin of light text on a dark background, though it does fit the theme.

So early signs are good, but they are very early. I’m not sure quite why you would keep coming back other than the excellent writing quality, and if you have a blog you can keep posting “I so agree with this” links.
